In a high-voltage cable having a semi-conducting layer of carbon loaded paper or tape between the conductor and the insulation, the semi-conducting layer comprises at least on its outer surface, a plastic film which is united with the plastic insulation. The film may be of the same material as the insulation, which may be of polythene, and the bonding may be effected during the extrusion of the insulation, or, if the latter is not extruded, by heating the conductor or semi-conducting layer. The semiconducting layer may be applied to the conductor as a helical winding or as an individual covering to each of the outer strands of the conductor. The semi-conducting layer may form a capacity graded intersheath comprising successive layers of carbon-loaded paper or cloth, each having a polythene film bonded to both sides.
