Abstract

854,774. Laminates. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. June 4, 1959 [June 5, 1958], No. 18055/58. Class 140. [Also in Group XXXVI] A dielectric screening tape for electric power cables comprises a layer of flexible synthetic organic thermoplastic material, preferably polythene, sandwiched between two fibrous tapes loaded with conducting material, preferably paper or fabric loaded with conducting carbon. The polythene may be " lightly irradiated," i.e. so treated with high energy radiation as to cause cross-linking of 60-80% of the material, the remainder being organic solvent-soluble and heat-softenable. The layers may be adhered together by winding them in superposed relation and under tension on a mandrel and heating in an oven to soften the polythene, by extruding unirradiated polythene between two layers of tape and subsequently hotcalendering, or by coating the polythene with an adhesive such as a rubber-resin composition adding the tapes and calendering.
