Abstract

In spinning fibres into yarn, the fibres are subjected to open-end spinning and then formed into a package while the twist is modified, the final yarn accordingly having a degree of twist differing from that of the yarn produced by the open-end spinning process. In carrying out the method, a sliver passes from a container 16 over a guide 17 to a drafting system 18; it then passes into an open-end spinning- unit 11, through a duct 19 where it is broken up into discrete fibres. In the unit 11 the fibres are spun into yarn which is withdrawn through a duct 21 and a lappet 22 of a ring-spinning unit of the "inverted" type (see Specification 723470 and 819935) to be wound, with twist, on a spindle 12. This spindle is operated to add to, or subtract from, the degree of twist imparted by the unit 11. The final twist can be adjusted either by driving the unit 11 at constant speed and varying the speed of spindle 12, or by varying the speed of unit 11 and driving the spindle 12 at constant speed. A cap or flyer spindle may be used instead of the ring and traveller spindle. The use of an "inverted" final spinning spindle facilitates attention by the operator, and allows a twisting thread to be lowered for starting or piecing into the unit 11.
