676,722. Production of thread from glass or other thermo-plastic material. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. March 10, 1950 [March 10, 1949], No. 6079/50. Classes 120(i), 120(ii) and 120(iii) A process for the production of threads formed from discontinuous fibres of glass or deposited on a receiving member in the form of a thin veil which leaves the member as a sliver, which is subjected to a drafting action to transform it into a roving, which is spun into thread, which is then wound on a bobbin, which process consists in carrying out the operations of drafting and spinning by independent means and utilising for the spinning operation a spinning pot, of which the peripheral speed is greater than the speed of the roving as it leaves the drafting device, this difference of speed assuring twisting of the roving and the said twist having a value which is a function of the difference in speeds. As shown molten glass in a crucible 3 flows from the orifices of spinerettes 2 in fine streams and is deposited into a funnel 5 the wall of which is formed by unconnected elements 6. The discontinuous fibres so formed are in the form of a thin veil on the wall of the funnel, which veil leaves the funnel at 9 in the form of a sliver which is subjected to a drawing force exercised by the ejector 10 in communication, through a tube 11, with a source of gaseous fluid under pressure. The drawing action parallelizes the fibres, the resulting roving leaves the tube, 15 and passes into the spinning pot 13 where it is spun on the internal wall of the pot to form a thread package, the traverse necessary for the formation of this package being obtained by vertical reciprocation of the ejector. More than one spinning pot may be provided and arrangements made to feed in to them successively so that whilst one is being filled the thread in the other or others is withdrawn and re-wound on to a bobbin.
