Marcn 10, 1950 [March 10, 1949], No. 6080/50. Classes 120(1), 120(2), and 120(3) A process for the production of strands or threads from continuous fibres of glass or other thermoplastic material of the kind in which the material in a viscous state is contained in a crucible provided with spinning orifices and flows from the orifices in thin streams, comprises the steps of converting the streams into continuous fibres by attenuation by a means whose sole function is to exercise the traction necessary to produce the said attenuation, grouping the fibres into a strand or thread and thereafter introducing the strand or thread into a pneumatic ejector and afterwards into a spinning pot so as to effect spinning and winding, the peripheral speed of the pot being greater than the speed of the strand or thread as it leaves the said means, and the difference between these speeds ensuring twisting of the strand or thread after it leaves the said means, the value of the twist being governed by the speed difference. As shown the molten material issues from the spinnerettes 2 in a crucible 3 in the form of streams 1 which are grouped together and sized by the member 4 and are then subjected to a mechanical drawing action by drawing rollers 5 to form a strand of untwisted fibres. This strand passes into the pneumatic ejector 7 and is introduced by this ejector into a spinning pot 9. The axis of the spinning pot may be offset from the line of attenuation suitable means being provided to guide the thread into the offset spinning pot. By this means several spinning pots can be arranged around the axis of attenuation one pot being filled whilst the others are being unwound. The unwinding may be done by a further ejector guiding the thread from the spinning pot on to a bobbin or other receiving member.
