Abstract

A rolling mill includes two positively driven backing rolls and a pair of working rolls which are frictionally driven by, and offset from the plane of, the backing rolls, the working rolls being supported by intermediate rolls and by rollers whose individual distances from the plane of the backing rolls can be varied to produce a desired profile on the working rolls. Work rolls 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, are urged by levers 36 and claws 27 against backing rolls 3, 3<SP>1</SP> and are supported laterally by rolls 55<SP>1</SP>, 44<SP>1</SP>, and rollers 661 carried in combs 7, 7<SP>1</SP>. Each comb, Fig. 1, bears against a bridge 10 or 10<SP>1</SP> which extends between the mill housings and which comprises enlarged ends 13 accommodating sleeves 14. A tension rod 15 has its oppositely threaded ends located within the sleeves such that rotation of the sleeve by a fluid pressure operated lever 16 moves the ends 13 towards or away from each other to deflect the bridge 10 or 10<SP>1</SP>. The working rolls are thereby bent slightly to control the profile of the gap between the rolls. In an alternative form, Fig. 3, the supporting rollers 44 are journalled in plates 45 which bear against bridges 49 extending between the housings. Between each bridge and plate 45 are located wedges 50 and 51 spaced along the length of the bridge. The wedges are connected to an eccentric shaft 57 which is angularly movable by fluid-pressure cylinders 59 to adjust the wedges vertically. By selecting suitable inclinations for the wedges spaced along each of the bridges, the working rolls 40 can be deflected to produce a desired roll gap.
