647,039. Rolling- machines, calenders, &c. indicating &c. HUGHES, A. T. Oct. 18, 1948, No. 24507. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups II and XXII] In a rolling mill, rod mill, calender or like machine, there is interposed between the bearing blocks e, f at each end of its pair or pairs of co-operating rolls, b, c, a rigid distance-piece to maintain the nip of said rolls a required distance apart, said distance-piece comprising a load or pressure measuring device adapted to indicate a load greater than that utilized between the nip of said rolls, and preset upon the bearing blocks. Projections f<SP>1</SP> on the block f engage in recesses c<SP>1</SP> in the block c to maintain the rolls in parallelism. The pressure measuring device h is preferably of the Statimeter " (Registered Trade Mark) type. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), each distance-piece includes adjustable wedge-shaped members by means of which the roll pass may be adjusted.
