[Also in Group XXXIV] A rolling mill stand comprises hydraulic devices for equalizing the pressures applied at each end of a roll, each device consisting of a closed, liquid-filled box or capsule 20, the bottom of which bears on the adjacent chock 3 while the top 21 engages with the screw-down 6 or the like or is capable of slight deflection under pressure, the boxes for the two chocks of the roll being interconnected. A hollow plug 24 breaks under a predetermined excess pressure of the liquid in the boxes. Should the pressure at opposite ends of a roll tend to become unequal due to improper adjustment or uneven work, the hydraulic system will maintain or restore the balance. Thus, work will remain straight even if of unequal thickness at the edges.
