Abstract

1,157,305. Rolling. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 18 July, 1966 [17 Aug., 1965], No. 32208/66. Heading B3M. [Also in Divisions B5 and D2] A rolling mill or calender incorporates means for applying bending forces to a pair of rolls in order to control the effective crown of the rolls, separate cylinder assemblies being provided for either increasing or decreasing their crown. In a fourhigh rolling mill having rolls 15-18 which may all be crowned, a beam 25 extends between the windows of the two mill housings 11, 12 and is positioned between the chocks 22 of the upper backing roll 17 and mill screws 29. A central pistoncylinder assembly 34, 35 urges the beam and the chocks 22 carried by the beam upwardly against the screws. A roll bending assembly 41 at each side of the mill includes a piston 43 which acts downwardly on the beam, and a second piston 42 acting upwardly against a crosshead 45, Fig. 2. The crosshead is connected by links 46 to wings 48 on a bearing 47 carried by the end of the roll 17. The ends of the roll are thus urged upwardly by the assemblies 41, the roll pivoting about rocker plates 27 on the chocks 22. The arrangement of the beam 25, crossheads 45, and links 46 ensures that the bending forces do not pass through the mill housings. A further piston 49 acts in the opposite sense to the pistons 42, 43, thereby decreasing the effective crown of the roll 17, and hence the roll 15. A similar arrangement is provided for the lower backing roll 18, a beam 51 being located between the bases of the housings 11 and 12 and the chocks 22 of the roll 18. Filler plates 52 are interchangeable to compensate for various diameters of roll used in the mill. Balance pistons 24 and 23 act between the backing roll chocks 22 and working roll chocks 21 at each side of the mill. The pressure acting on the pairs of pistons 24, Fig. 1, as well as the effective pressure area, is maintained equal to that acting on the respective piston 49. The mill arrangement is suitable for use in calendering paper or rubber.
