[Also in Division B3] A roll deflecting attachment, for at least one roll of a rolling mill for metal or plastic sheets, includes a bearing 30 arranged at each end of a roll 16, the bearings having couples applied to them to cause controlled bending of the roll 16 in order to compensate for bending of the roll in the opposite direction under a normal rolling load. The bearings can be applied, as shown, to the two backing rolls 16, 116 which support working rolls 14, 114, or can be applied to the working rolls. Each bearing 30 includes bushes 32 located within a housing 31, one bearing for each roll incorporating an hydraulic unit 44 which urges projections 34 of the housings towards each other. A piston 46 of the unit 44 reacts against a crosshead 36, connected by a pair of parallel tie rods 38 to the crosshead of the opposite unit, and thence urges a pin 50 against the opposite projections 34. Alternatively, a second unit 44 can replace the pin 50. Reaction bars 52 extend, on each side of the roll 16, between lugs 54 on the housings 31, both the tie rods 38 and the bars 52 passing through holes in the chocks 20 of the roll. Each bar can alternatively be formed in three sections which are bolted to the chocks. The bars can be eliminated by providing a single reaction bar, 70, Fig. 5, which passes centrally through the roll 16. Although the deflecting attachments remove the need for crowned rolls, such rolls can be incorporated in the mill. If the degree of crowning is greater than that necessary to compensate for roll bending under load, the attachments can be arranged to operate in the opposite directions.
