Abstract
1,256,907. Rolling mills. QUAY DYNAMICS Ltd. 17 Feb., 1970 [25 Feb., 1969], No. 10114/69. Heading B3M. The work rolls or backing rolls of a rolling mill are bent by applying forces to bearings 38 located on extensions of the roll journals, the reactions of the bending forces being taken by struts 54, so that the forces are not transmitted to the mill housings. Considering the upper roll 16, the bending forces are applied to the bearings 38 by links 50 pivotally connected to the ends of horizontal levers 42<SP>1</SP> and 4211. The levers are themselves pivoted at 44 to the ends of a hollow beam 40, and are positioned within the beam. Jacks 62 act between the free ends of the levers and transverse beams 72. Vertical struts 54 extend between the beam 40 and further bearings 36, and are guided at 56 and 58. The transverse beams 72 are balanced by jacks 74 which accommodate vertical movement of the roll 16. The lower roll 18 is similarly bent, but a simpler arrangement of balancing jacks is possible since the roll is not adjusted. The roll bending apparatus is arranged to be removable from the mill, and can be modified, if desired, to bend the rolls in the opposite sense.
