Abstract

1379108 Rolling mills T SENDZIMIR 29 June 1972 30549/72 Heading B3M A mill for rolling flat articles (e.g. strip) includes a pair of work rolls 7 (Fig. 2), each being backed by a series of castors 6 and 6<SP>1</SP> carried on shafts 5 and 5<SP>1</SP>, the shafts being so supported in eccentrics 3 and 3<SP>1</SP> that simultaneous or individual rotation of the eccentrics causes the castors 6 and 6<SP>1</SP> respectively to adjust the roll position or the roll crown. Each eccentric is supported in a saddle plate 1 (Figs. 1 and 2) mounted in the mill frame 2. The eccentrics may be rotated by toothed sectors 8<SP>1</SP> secured to them, or by vertically positioned hydraulic rams (Fig. 4, not shown). In the latter case the saddles may be cut away to accommodate the lever arms associated with the rams. Each sector 8 meshes with a toothed sleeve 10<SP>1</SP> carried on a common shaft 11<SP>1</SP>, the shaft being rotated by an actuator 13<SP>1</SP> to rotate the sleeves and hence adjust the roll gap. The sleeves are axially adjustable along the shaft 11<SP>1</SP> by individual worms 15<SP>1</SP> and annuli 14<SP>1</SP> to distribute the torque applied to the sectors. The upper work roll need not be adjustable. Two pairs of work rolls may be provided in a skin passing mill (Fig. 5), only one pair being used at any time. The shafts 5<SP>11</SP> located between the rolls are movable between two positions to cause the associated castors to move one or other roll to be shifted to a working position. Strip being rolled in the mill passes around tensioning rollers 28, 29 and 28<SP>1</SP> 29<SP>1</SP>, the tension across its width being measured by sensors 31. Air under pressure is supplied to a trough 33 beneath the sensors so that the upward deflection of the strip gives a measure of its tension. The rams 23 are individually controlled in response to the tension measurements to control the roll pressure and provide a flat strip.
