Abstract

1,210,674. Rolling; curving. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 21 Nov., 1968 [21 Nov., 1967; 3 April, 1968 (2)], Nos. 52852/67, 15928/68 and 15929/68. Headings B3E and B3M. A strip processing apparatus, having a pair of work rolls between which strip passes, is provided with a flexible beam associated with one of the rolls, the beam being controllably bent to vary the contour of the roll. The forces acting on the roll, and hence the thickness of the strip, can thus be made more uniform. As applied to a bending apparatus, Figs. 1 and 2, a flexible beam 7 is associated with a work roll 1, the beam carrying castors 6 which contact the roll. The roll 1 co-operates with a larger roll 2 which has a resilient coating of, for example, nylon or polyurethane and which may be hollow. The beam is bent by means of units 8 extending between the beam and a rigid beam 5. The units are movable along the beam 3 and can be hydraulically, pneumatically or electromagnetically operated, or can comprise wedges or screw jacks. The units are operable individually or in unison. A similar arrangement, Fig. 6, is applied to a rolling mill, flexible beams 18 and 19 being associated with the work rolls 15 and 14. A pair of beams cann be provided for each work roll, if desired, the beams being located on opposite sides of the respective rolls. In the rolling apparatus the units can be individually controlled in response to thickness gauges positioned across the width of the strip. The gauges may be upstream and/or downstream of the apparatus.
