Abstract

1,154,844. Casting processes. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 10 June, 1966 [16 July, 1965], No. 20546/66. Heading B3F. In the casting of articles in which a directionally extending substantially parallel columnar crystalline structure is required the mould has an extension 12 to produce a growth portion external to the machine finished dimension, in which the random crystalline structure caused by direct contact with a chill plate 22 is formed, and which is subsequently machined off. A turbine blade is cast having a growth portion containing the random crystalline structure which is machined off at line 21, leaving a parallel finished blade. Induction heating coils 24 are used to heat the mould and, after pouring, the temperature of the mould is reduced in the direction from the water cooled chill plate to top of the mould.
