Abstract

1,140,395. Continuous casting. A. WERTLI. 25 March, 1966 [3 May, 1965], No. 13430/66. Heading B3F. In a horizontal continuous casting process for the production of metal strip in which the cooling of the strip is varied across its width means for effecting the cooling action comprise a graphite mould 4 located within a two part cooling jacket 1, 2, the jacket being provided with a plurality of separate U -shaped cooling chambers forming separate cooling zones 8 each zone being supplied with a cooling media. To produce a required cooling effect on a strip the quantity of coolant passing through different zones in the cooling jacket may be varied, or the temperature of the coolant passing through different zones may be varied. A further alternative incorporates the use of different cooling media in different zones to produce a differential cooling effect on the strip. A combination of these alternatives for cooling may be used. Also, the shape of the cooling chambers in the jacket may be different from those depicted in the drawings.
