Abstract

1,209,382. Making cores. BRITISH CAST IRON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 18 March, 1969 [16 March, 1968], No. 12867/68. Heading B3F. In order to form a venting passage in a sand core, part of the core, with a groove 14, is formed, e.g. in a core box by a hot or coldblowing process, and then a tube or channel member or a bar 15 which leaves a passage between itself and the bottom of the groove is placed in the groove and the remainder of the core is then formed on the groove face. For forming the core-half 13, the core-box half 10 is closed by a plate (11) bearing a rib (12) to produce the groove 14 which need not be straight. The tube or channel insert has small openings along its length and like the bar insert 15 may be of plastics material, to be destroyed by the heat of the cast metal. If the shapes of the core and insert permit the removal of the latter after casting, it may be of metal.
