Abstract

1,254,215. Casting composite articles; casting processes. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 28 Feb., 1969 [20 March, 1968], No. 10716/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F1] A composite structure of alloy 28 and refractory 18 (e.g. alumina-based ceramic) is made by locating at least one refractory insert 16 in a mould 4 (e.g. made from alumina slurry) standing on a chill plate 6 and introducing the alloy into the lower part of the mould, as from a pipe 12. The mould is preheated by an electric coil 14, or susceptor and induction coil, and the plate 6 cooled by water circulated in ducts 8 to establish a temperature gradient so that the solidifying alloy has columnar structure in portions 22, 30 of the mould and single crystal wires 28 are formed in bores through the refractory insert 16. The wires 28 may be of a uniform size or non-uniform sizes and interconnect the columnar structured end pieces so that the refractory portion of the composite structure is compressed. The composite structure may be a gasturbine nozzle stator vane or a structure having application in a gas-turbine rotor or prestressed pressure vessel. The alloy 28 may be a Ni or Co base alloy, e.g. a superalloy.
