Abstract

1352853 Hot pressing ceramic articles DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 20 Oct 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 52174/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] An article having at least two sections of differing wall thickness is hot pressed from silicon nitride in two stages, in the first of which a first mixture of silicon nitride powder and a fluxing agent is hot pressed in a first mould to provide a first section which is then placed in a second mould which accommodates the first section and in which one or more other sections can be formed; in the second stage the remaining mould space is filled with a second mixture of silicon nitride powder and a fluxing agent so that the said one or more other sections may be formed by hot pressing the second mixture, the resultant one or more sections becoming bonded to the first. By using removable graphite cores, internal duets may be provided in the first section. One section may comprise the aerofoil portions of a gas turbine engine blade and the other either the platform or a shroud of the blade.
