Abstract
1470949 Silicon nitride gas turbine rotor FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 8 March 1976 [25 April 1975] 09121/76 Heading F1T [Also in Divisions B5 and C1] A silicon nitride rotor for a gas turbine engine having a hub of density greater than the blades is manufactured by making a blade ring 10 of silicon particles in a forming operation, nitriding the blade ring to convert it to substantially pure silicon nitride; coating all but a bonding surface 16 of the blade ring with a release agent, boron nitride specified, and then encapsulating all but the bonding surface of the blade ring with silicon nitride 18, 20 to form a die member; placing the die member in a pressing die structure 22 so that the bonding surface of the blade ring forms a portion of the surface of a die volume formed by the pressing die structure; filling the die volume with a mixture 42 of from 94 to 99.5 wt. per cent silicon nitride particles and from 6.0 to 0.5 wt. per cent of a densification aid, magnesium oxide specified; compacting the mixture under the simultaneous application of heat and pressure to at least 98% of theoretical density thereby forming the hub 44 bonded to the blade ring along the blade ring's bonding surface; and removing the pressed structure from the die and the encapsulant from the blade ring to obtain the complete rotor. The first element may be made by either a slip casting operation or by an injection moulding process.
