Abstract

1420318 Compression moulding ROLLSROYCE (1971) Ltd 29 Oct 1973 [4 Nov 1972] 50962/72 Heading B5A A method of making an article from powder comprises loading the powder into a die and applying pressure to make a preform, the pressure being applied initially to that part of the powder which has the greatest dimension in the direction of pressing and then to the remainder of the powder in order of diminishing dimension in the direction of pressing. The free surface of the powder, after loading into the die may be levelled off to form a top face composed of upper and lower platforms 20, 22 interconnected by a sloping portion 24. The powder is pressed by a plunger 16 having a working face matching the upper face of the powder apart from the connecting portion 30 which has a smaller angle of inclination to the horizontal than that of the powder so that as the plunger 16 is lowered pressure is applied in order of diminishing thickness of the powder with the result that a uniform density is obtained (Figs. 3, 4). The die 10 has a vertically movable base 14 which is raised to its upper position to allow the powder to be loaded (Fig. 1) and then lowered to the position shown for pressing of the powder. The preform formed from the powder may be heated to 1850‹ C. and pressed at 300 p.s.i. in a further die to form the article. The material is silicon carbide or silicon nitride which may comprise magnesium oxide. The article may be rotor or stator blades or guide vanes for gas turbine engines.
