Abstract

1512995 Two-stage compression of particulate material MITSUISHI FUKAI TEKKOSHO LTD 7 May 1975 [9 May 1974] 19220/75 Heading B5A Particulate material is compressed in a first stage in a mould to form an intermediate brick, which is then compressed further in a second stage in a mould after entrapped air has escaped from the material, this mould having a cross-sectional area perpendicular to the direction of compression that is greater than that of the intermediate brick. A single mould of variable cross-sectional area can be used for the two stages of compression, or as described the brick is transferred to a second mould. In Fig. 1, a charger 4 transfers a supply of particulate material from a hopper 3 to a first mould 8 wherein it is compressed by an upper plunger 12. The mould 8 and charger 4 are then lowered by cylinders 11, and a pusher 5 moves the intermediate brick 28 onto a table 26, where entrapped air escapes. A shifter 15 then moves the brick 28 on the lower abutment 23 of a second press, the second mould 19 is raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 with spacing left all or partially around the brick, and an upper plunger 22 compresses the brick. The second mould 19 and shifter 15 are lowered by cylinders 21, the brick engaged and raised by a holder 16 and cylinder 17, and then placed on a conveyor 30 for removal or further compression stages. A succession of pairs of bricks are compressed in side-by-side mould cavities and transferred simultaneously; Fig. 6 illustrates the transfer stage.
