1,238,253. Continuous casting. TSENTKALNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT CHERNOI METALLURGII IMENI I.P. BARDINA. 7 Feb., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 6819/69. Heading B3F. A rectangular continuous casting mould has four walls 1 of copper, the lower corners of which are cut away at 2. Ceramic or metal members 3 (Fig. 3) are placed in the corners leaving a gap 4 in the mould cavity. The lower portions of the walls are provided with longitudinally slotted surfaces 7 having plane boundaries 10. Superheated steam is fed as a coolant to the slots by bores 9 whilst heaters 6 are placed in the corners of the moulds. Consequently, a billet cast in the mould is cooled more quickly at its faces than at its corners. The rate of heating and supply of coolant can be controlled to ensure uniform thickness of the solid metal skin as the cast billet leaves the mould.
