Abstract

1,153,587. Composting. F. PRAT. 27 June, 1966 [30 June, 1965], No. 28719/66. Heading C1B. Household waste is aerobically composted in three stages in a mobile silo which is open at the top, has perforated side and bottom walls closable by external shuttering of Venetian blind type, and has removable perforated air injection tubes. The openings of the perforated walls may form 60% of the area of the walls. A layer of compost product is laid on the freshly charged waste in the silo and a mixture of air and steam at a temperature of 65‹ C. and a pressure of ca. 22 1b/sq. inch is injected into the waste while the shuttering is open. The silo is then exposed to atmospheric air only, with the shuttering half closed. Finally, composting is completed with the shuttering completely closed. Total composting time may be four days. Coarse material produced by screening the composted waste is freed from metal, crushed, recombined with fine material, and the mixture freed from plastics material. A plurality of silos in series are treated semi-automatically.
