Abstract

Manures are made by breaking up peat in a peat bed, collecting the aerated peat and layering it on a bed of divided or broken up composted sewage sludge and/or house refuse, the composted material being sufficiently active to effect by heat a partial dehydration of the peat whereby the peat is able to sustain aerobic bacteria originating from the composted material, allowing the resulting bed to stand for a few days and then effecting a thorough mixing of the contents of the bed. The composted material may be made either by mixing lime with sludge and/or refuse, and/or mixing a wetter or drier vegetable substance with the sludge and/or refuse, or according to Specification 425,411. Peaty substances, such as vegetable material obtained from waterways &c. may be used instead of or together with the peat. Additional peat and/or peaty substances may be added to the layered material at the time the contents of the bed are mixed, and the product may be used wholly or in part in place of the composted material as the starting material.
