Abstract

572,171. Fertilizers. HOLFORD PROCESSES. Ltd., and HOLFORD, H. J. Aug. 19, 1943, No. 13489. [Class 111] An organic fertilizer is obtained by mixing an organic fibrous or semi-fibrous material with a bacteria-containing liquor, subjecting the mixture to aerobic treatment in an aerator, such as a mixing mill, whereby the material is mechanically agitated whilst being brought into intimate contact with air, subjecting the fermenting mass to pasteurisation by passing heated air through it and simultaneously removing some moisture from it, and finally, subjecting the pasteurised mass to mechanical pressure to remove only a part of its water content. Suitable fibrous starting materials are granulated peat, disentegrated straw, sawdust, seaweed and/or river-weed. The bacteria-containing liquid may be sewage sludge, preferably of the lagoon or activated type. The pasteurising treatment may be effected at a temperature of about 160‹F. in a rotary screen or a mixing mill. Inorganic fertilizing salts such as ammonium sulphate, sodium nitrate, phosphates, or potash salts, gaseous ammonia, or lime may be introduced into the mixture prior to its pasteurisation. The mixture may also have incorporated in it a moisture-absorbing medium such as sawdust or dry town refuse. Specifications 488,858 and 500,548 are referred to.
