Abstract

A humus fertilizer is obtained from sewage sludge by preparing a fibrous mixture of a divided character from sewage sludge and a substantially smaller quantity of one or more fibrous absorbent cellulosic materials sufficient to absorb the free liquid, allowing the mixture to ferment aerobically within a pit or cell until a temperature in excess of 50 DEG C. is attained, controlling the alkalinity by adding to the mixture, either before or during fermentation, a suitable acid-neutralizing material, e.g. hydrated lime, and subjecting the partially fermented mass to a current of air to effect oxidation and dehydration. Suitable cellulosic materials include raw fibrous cellulosic materials, fibre pulp, peat preferably air-dried, or mixtures thereof with or without paper or cardboard. These may be employed in proportions of one part to five parts of sewage sludge. The required fibrous divided character of the material to be fermented can be obtained by teasing, opening up or loosening the cellulosic material when it is in admixture with the sewage sludge. The addition of alkaline material is preferably such that a final pH of about 7,4 is attained. A substance which will absorb ammoniacal vapours, e.g. calcium sulphate, and/or a suitable carbohydrate nutrient, e.g. sugar-beet tailings, may be added to the mixture before or during fermentation. The fermentation may be conducted in an apparatus as described in Specification 487,837. The oxidizing step may be effected in a tunnel having an agitating conveyer mechanism for moving the fermenting material through the tunnel. Preferably the tunnel is divided into a number of sections, the conveyer mechanism in each successive section being operated at a higher speed than in the preceding section. An air stream is passed through the tunnel, preferably in counter-current to the material.
