B. Giftstoffe As, Cu, Sb, Hg u. a. können den Zer- setzungsprozess stark beeinflussen.

The invention relates to a method for processing (detoxification) digested sludge, which is toxic
Contains compounds of arsenic, antimony and / or mercury, characterized in that an agent is added to the digested sludge for the purpose of anaerobic degradation to essentially methane, carbonic acid and water, which is able to buffer the pH value and the redox potential is such as B. a mixture of the hydroxides of the fur and FEIII, and that the said addition is made in such amounts that the pH of the digested sludge to between 6, 6 and 8, 2, preferably to 6, 8 to 7, 5, and that Redox potential can be set to a value between -0.2 to -0.5 EH2 volts, preferably -0.2 to -0.3 EH2 volts.
The use of Rusma or Vagebi as a depilatory is particularly popular in the Arab countries. The preparation essentially consists of one part auripigment (AS2S3), which is also called Rauschgelb or arsenic HI sulfide, and 5 parts quicklime (CaO). This mixture is finely powdered, mixed with water and often applied in a porridge form with flour to the skin to be depilated.
The aura pigment is practically insoluble in water, has a specific weight of 3.43
It is resistant to acids, but not very stable in alkaline solutions, so that it is dissolved by ammonia water and even weakly basic ammonium carbonate, resulting in a mixture of arsenites with sulfoarsenites. AS2S3 is practically non-toxic as long as it is not converted into other trivalent arsenic compounds. The excess of the depilatory agent ends up with the hair in the sewage network and thus in the sewage treatment plant. The main part of auripigment already settles unchanged in the primary settlement tank with the hair and other sediment substances and from there it reaches the digester, where it is converted into toxic arsenic compounds under reducing anaerobic conditions. This explains the deplorable disruption of the rotting process.
Even smaller businesses that deal with tannery still use depilatories that contain arsenic. This is another way of getting arsenic into the digester. A not insignificant part of the colloidally distributed aura pigment is separated out unchanged with the activated sludge, since its oxidizing treatment hardly causes any conversion. The hair also absorbs a small amount of arsenic and binds it to the cystine groups of the elongated keratin molecule.
The antimony and mercury compounds, which were included in the method according to the invention for reasons of analogy, behave similarly.
Due to the reduction processes in the digester, the arsenic compounds are exposed to
H donors are partially converted into the very toxic arsine AsH3 and its compounds, which damage the digester process even at a very low concentration. There is a garlic or disgusting smell of kakodyl. The content of As in the supernatant liquid increases significantly, while the content of the bottom sludge is depleted in As. At the same time, methane formation drops sharply, as will be pointed out later. In the case of the antimony compounds, the antimony butter is created, which migrates into the floating sludge layer, while with the mercury, toxic sublimate compounds can arise.
Since the practical application is currently mainly based on the harmful effects of arsenic in the digester, this is also mainly discussed below.
The chemical breakdown of the hair in the digester is of lesser importance in terms of quantity, since the majority of the hair can be found in the discharged mud. Insofar as the degradation takes place, it theoretically proceeds in such a way that the disulfide bridge is reduced into two isolated sulfhydryl radicals, from which
Keratin two keratein molecules are formed. The absorption capacity of arsenic can be derived from the following
Illustrate equation:
EMI1.1
Hiebei the mercapto groups of certain enzymes, which are derived from the cystine groups z. B. of keratin, fixed by covalent bonds. The terminal hydrocarbon groups are now accessible for the microbiological process and the arsenic is reduced to arsenic hydrogen by further H donors.
Through the gradual substitution of the hydrogen atoms in arsine with alkyl groups, the primary, secondary and tertiary arsines are derived from it, followed by the quaternary arsonium salts as the highest alkylation level.
In general it can be said that the toxic effects of arsenic decrease with increasing value.
Most of the 5-valent arsenic compounds are less toxic than the 3-valent arsenic compounds. Pharmacology has made use of these properties. Sometimes this is also the reason why the arsenic poisoning in the oxidic degradation stage is less evident in the activated sludge than in the digester. The strongly reducing processes caused by the H-donors, such as
B. (NAD, FAD), lead the five-valent arsenic compounds into three-valent very toxic ones
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Arsine compounds via, and the trivalent sulfur compounds of arsenic are split up and converted into arsine and sulfur compounds. This explains the aforementioned disturbances in the anaerobic digestion process and the characteristic smell.
The processes in the digester form the subject of numerous investigations and are only touched upon here to the extent that they are necessary for understanding the method according to the invention. The dismantling takes place in 2 stages. The first stage is the liquefaction stage of the solids, the second stage the gasification. The acid-forming bacteria are responsible for the first stage, the methane-forming bacteria for the second.
The remaining organic substances in the thickened sludge are broken down in the dark and in the absence of oxygen through the metabolism of the acid-forming bacteria and methane bacteria as well as the nitrifying and sulphate-reducing bacteria.
The acid-producing bacteria convert the complex organic compounds into simpler compounds such as B. vinegar, propionic and butyric acid. These substances serve the methane bacteria as nutrients and are further converted into simple compounds.
Most anaerobic digestion bacteria are mesophilic in character. They are most effective at around 370C, which is why digesters are heated.
The organic acids formed are converted into their salts and are not freely available, which is why the most favorable pH value for the anaerobic digestion process is close to 7, usually in the weakly alkaline range.
EMI2.1
for PH 8 indicated with -0.48 and -0.5 EH2 volts. The optimal redox potential range is between about -0.2 to -0.3 volts for a pH range of 6.8 to about 7.5 pH.
The total alkalinity is in the form of bicarbonate and acetate alkalinity, since most of the organic acids in question are only slightly stronger than carbonic acid.
For the method according to the invention, it is therefore essential that a substance is added to which a pi-buffering effect and the setting of the redox potential of -0.2 to -0.5 EH2 volts are brought about at the same time. The most essential aim of the process according to the invention is to prevent the formation of arsine. Experiments have shown that in the specified PH and rH ranges from As S3, for example, no arsine is produced during anaerobic putrefaction if, according to the invention, a substance is added which is both a pH buffer and a rH buffer within of the specified ranges works.
In comparison, the tests have shown that in the absence of such a substance, methane fermentation and formation in the presence of As Sg come to an almost complete standstill. According to the invention, it is not primarily intended that the precipitation products serve as adsorbents, but rather the buffer effect of the PH and rH range is used to prevent the metabolism of the anaerobic degradation process from creating conditions that would allow it , e.g. B. to form AS2 Ss arsine AsH3. The best results are obtained by adding a mixture of the hydroxides of Fe and Fe. This increases the gas development within a short time.
If one compares digested sludge to which AsSg alone was added, the methane development decreases and comes to a complete standstill after 2 to 3 days. The digester gas gets the garlic-like smell of arsine. Gradually another undesirable metabolism takes over the anaerobic degradation of the digested sludge, which not only takes a considerably longer time, but also spreads a bad smell.
It is already known to introduce C02 into the strongly alkaline quicklime-containing sludge, see German Patent No. 591528, during the decay of tannery sludge; this leads to the formation of freshly precipitated carbonate sludge, the pH value thus drops from a strongly alkaline range to an almost neutral range. With a very high alkali content, a preservative effect is achieved that comes close to a sterile, biologically not very active solution. This method is also not intended to simultaneously create a pH-regulating solution as well as an rH-buffering solution that inhibits the formation of toxic arsine compounds. In accordance with the state of the art at the time, it was not possible to consider the rH value as the 2nd
To control component as a regulator for the degradation of digested sludge. The adsorption effect is certainly also of importance in the process according to the invention, because an accelerated reaction can also be expected with a larger surface. Likewise z. B. an intensive gas circulation during the degradation process is known to be advantageous. However, all of this is ineffective if the addition according to the invention does not prevent the formation of harmful substances. It is known that z. B. As2 sus is difficult to dissolve in neutral water. In strong alkalis, the connection to the arsenate dissolves and is then released by the H donors when the redox range falls below 0.5 EHz volts, e.g. B. implemented in AsH3; but this is precisely what is to be prevented by the method according to the invention.
Tests with thickened municipal fresh sludge in the anaerobic digestion, without pollutants, after about 50 hours at a digestion temperature of about 370C, produced a gas mixture of about 69% methane and 30.7% C02. These values can vary widely in enzymatically adapted cultures

just a general comparison value. Inhibitors such as B. Toxins As, Cu, Sb, Hg u. a. can have a strong influence on the decomposition process. The substrate to be decomposed has a decisive influence on the composition of the digester gas, in which ratio C: H: 0: N, depending on the fat content in the sludge, the digester gas composition between% CO:% CH between 1: 1.7 and 1: 2 lets sway. Take more damage. The water content and the density of the thickened sludge, which is digested, must also be taken into account. Too much dilution leads, on the one hand, to a decrease in the concentration of the biocultures and, on the other hand, increases the solubility of the pollutants, which is why continuous density control of the digested sludge is necessary.
A moderate excess of the additive to be used according to the invention is beneficial for the anaerobic digestion process, since the flakes and solid particles formed are better colonized with living
