Abstract
A manure is obtained by adding fish, vegetable or animal oil or fat, with or without bones and/or bone meal, phosphate rock or lime, to peat and digesting the mixture by fermentation by subjecting it to the action of thermophile bacteria so as to hydrolyse the oils and fats and any extracted ossein and to cause their organic combination with the peat humus and the partial dehydration of the mass. The fermentation may be effected in two stages, in the first by anaerobic bacteria and in the second by thermophile aerobic bacteria, for example as set forth in Specification 487,837. It is preferable to maintain the pH at about 7,5 to 8,0 by the addition of a substance such as calcium carbonate. According to an example, moist peat is disintegrated and oil or fat, bones, and lime are mixed with it. The mass is filled into a concrete chamber while being sprayed with sewage sludge. The chamber is then closed during the anaerobic stage any liquid collecting in the sump being re-sprayed on to the mass. The temperature may be above 50 DEG C. during the anaerobic stage. The aerobic stage is then carried out the chamber being unsealed and the temperature being allowed to rise to 80-85 DEG C. The mass is maintained at the elevated temperature until sufficiently dehydrated, say to 15 per cent moisture content. A bacteria nutrient such as cane molasses or sugar beet tailings may be added.
