Abstract

Fertilizers are produced by the fermentation of town refuse by first crushing it and then adding the waste liquor resulting from leaching plant growth in an alkaline substance so as to neutralise the acidity which is manifested at the beginning of the fermentation and then leaving the mixture for composting in the open air. In preferred embodiments, crushed town refuse containing 55-60% on dry weight of organic matter is intimately mixed with black liquor having a density of 6 DEG Baume obtained by treating wheat straw pulp with caustic soda at 100 DEG C, by means of a mixing screw, up to 10% of a calcium salt such as the chloride, nitrate or phosphate is added and the mixture composted in the open air until a granular product containing about 40% of water is obtained. Agricultural refuse, industrial refuse, peat, and conventional fertilizers containing N, P and K may also be added.
