Abstract

Process for composting household refuse and apparatus in which the process is carried out. The process produces a uniform product without the evolution of molodours. Household refuse is freed of metal and then ground down whilst being mixed with fresh or putrified residual slime or water. The mixture is then passed into the top of a column and passes slowly to the bottom. Air is pumped into the column and mixes with the refuse. Air pressure is kept above atmospheric by restriction of the air outlet. At the bottom of the column the composted refuse is continuously removed, e.g. by means of a rotating screw.
