Abstract
748,297. Composting method and apparatus MORRISON, W. L. June 27, 1953, No. 20804/53. Class 111. Manure is composted as a vertically disposed mass on an apertured floor in a vertical composting zone having an air outlet above and an air inlet below the mass supported therein to permit natural or forced ventilation upwardly through the mass, and some of the manure is withdrawn from the bottom of the mass and conveyed around the mass to be returned to the top of the mass being composted. As shown in Fig. 1, the composting zone 1 consists of a downwardly flaring chimney 1 containing a mass of manure 2 supported partially on screw conveyers 3 and partially on a perforated floor 4. Screw conveyers 3 feed manure periodically or continuously to a horizontal conveyer 7 from whence the manure passes through vertical conveyer 9 and upper horizontal conveyer 11 for return to the composting zone 1. Raw manure is fed through a closed port 20 and on completion of the process the final product is withdrawn from the upper horizontal conveyer 11 through a pipe 18. The air circulation is effected by the provision of a pipe 27 (Fig. 2) leading from the top of the mass through a fan 13 for return to the bottom of the composting zone through perforated floor 4. Heating or moistening means 15 and 14 may be provided in the pipe for circulating air. In addition air may be withdrawn from the top of the zone through a fan 26. The conveyers 7, 11 and 9 are preferably enclosed.so that air may circulate upwardly through the mass and downwardly to the bottom of the mass through the conveyer closures.
