Abstract

1,149,053. Electrostatic precipitators. LODGE-COTTERELL Ltd. 1 Dec., 1966 [14 Dec., 1965], No. 52989/65. Heading B2J. A rapping device for an electrostatic precipitator is mounted on an endless conveyor which moves the device successively and continuously past rapping points 44, Fig. 3, on the precipitator. The precipitator casing 12, Fig. 1, comprises three groups of discharge electrodes 32 and three groups of collector electrode plates 28, each plate having a rapping point 44 and being suspended from a rod 30 supported by tension rods 31 which are suspended from the roof 20 of the precipitator casing 12. The rapping apparatus 21 comprises three mechanisms 40, each comprising a rectangular framework 52 extending along the roof 20 at right angles to its associated group of plates 28 and an endless motor-driven chain conveyor carrying rapping devices 42, Fig. 3. In operation, as a device 42 approaches a spring-loaded beam 46 which lies in the plane of an associated plate 28 to form a rapping point 44, a cam roll 76 on a bell crank lever 72 moves up a surface 80 of a guide 47 to raise pivoted rapping hammers 74 which are keyed to a shaft 70 together with the lever 72 until the roll falls over the edge 82 of the guide 47. The hammers then rap the beam 46. The three rapping mechanisms are arranged so that the speed of rapping of the left hand (Fig. 1) group of plates 28 is greatest and that of the right hand group least, either by providing different numbers of rapping devices or by having different chain speeds. By not rapping each group of plates 28 simultaneously excessive local re-entrainment of dust in the gas is prevented.
