In an electrostatic precipitator each collecting electrode comprises movable sections with alternate sections disposed in regions of high and low H.T. current density, and means are provided for periodically displacing these sections to move the surfaces in regions of high current density to regions of low current density and vice-versa. As shown each collecting electrode comprises number of sections 1, 2, Fig. 1, arranged in planes parallel to the gas flow with strips 3 located between adjacent sections arranged at right angles to the gas flow, the sections being staggered so that alternate sections are in line with opposite edges of the intervening strips and the sections are displaced into the positions 1a, 2a, at directions at right angles to the gas flow by shafts 9, Fig. 3, which are turned at intervals in opposite directions, the sections 2 being carried by lugs 10 beneath the shafts and the section 1 by hoops 12 mounted on lugs 11 above the shaft so that the alternate sections move in opposite directions. As the sections move away from the adjacent discharge electrode 5 into the zone of low H.T. current density they dislodge collected dust from the strips 3 and at the end of their travel in this direction the collected dust, no longer electrically charged, may be dislodged; e.g., by rapping.
