In an electrostatic precipitator comprising a bank of tubular collecting electrodes each containing a central electrode 32 for setting up the dust precipitating field, each tubular electrode consists of telescoping members 10, 20. The upper members 10 are fixed to the housing while the lower members 20 are slideable to scrape the insides of the upper members by means of rods 28 actuated by pneumatic cylinders 30, and to jar against stops 22. The inner electrodes 32 are enlarged at 36 to preserve constant spacing with respect to the tubular electrodes 10, 20, and carry at their lower ends ionizing wires 34. The upper ends 26 of the lower members 20 are rounded to prevent electrical discharge. Each bank of tubular electrodes is located in a sector compartment of a circular housing 16. Sector-shaped sealing plates 50, 54 are rotatable with respect to the housing 16 to isolate compartments for cleaning while at the same time allowing the passage of purging gas through these compartments in the opposite direction to normal gas flow. During cleaning the banks are de-energized. The rotation of the sector plates 50, 54 may actuate the pneumatic cylinders 30.
