Abstract

533,198. Electrical precipitation apparatus. LODGE-COTTRELL, Ltd. (Research Corporation of New York.). Oct. 17, 1939, No. 28075. [Class 39 (i)] The discharge electrodes in electrical gas cleaning apparatus comprises a rigid supporting frame 14, 141 round which are wound in helical form helices 20 of fine wire. The frame may also carry fine wire discharge elements 19. As shown the application is to a precipitator of the type having collecting plates 13 supported and electrically connected to the shell 10, in which the gas under treatment flows vertically between inlet and outlet openings 11, 12. The discharge electrode system is supported by insulators 16 mounted in heated housings 17 ; and liquid sprays 21 are mounted at the upper end of the shell. A modification is described for pipe type cleaners, Fig. 2, not shown, in which the discharge elements consist of rods with the helices wound around them helically. The rods are supported at the lower ends on beams carried by insulators in housings protected from the entrance of liquid by obliquely arranged sleeves. The pipe collectors are supported by a diaphragm dividing the shell into upper and lower chambers ; and liquid sprays are mounted at the upper end of the shell. The wire helices are secured to their supports at spaced points by welding and are preferably of non-resilient material, so as to maintain their position in the event of a break at any point.
