Abstract

722,933. Protective respirators. SOC. FINANCIERE D'EXPANSION COMMERCIALE ET INDUSTRIELLE SOC. ANON. SFINDEX. June 4, 1952 [Aug. 18, 1951], No. 14147/52. Class.81 (2). A respirator for excluding dust &c. has radioactive material in an ionizing chamber for charging the incoming air, an electrostatic separator formed as a removable cartridge containing a plurality of sets of electrodes arranged one behind the other and also means for creating an electrical field transverse to the ionizing chamber. The radioactive material is carried on a metal plate and may be mounted on a cylindrical member at the centre of a circular air intake or it may'be placed at the apex 12 of a sector-shaped inlet. In order to assist in completely charging the air an electric field is maintained between the radioactive material 12 and a metal plate 26 set opposite to it at the further boundary of the air intake. A modified form of ionizer provides two plates carrying radio-active material mounted at spaced points on a circular inlet see Fig. 7 (not shown), a single large counter-electrode being mounted opposite them. Each section 29, 30 of the separator cartridge preferably comprises two metal foil electrodes with insulating spacers between them, wound spirally around a central mandrel 6 which may also form an electrical contact for one electrode. The electrodes may alternatively be of wire mesh. If desired a physical filtering medium may be mounted between the two electrode systems 29, 30 or may be incorporated in the insulating strips between the electrodes.
