1,137,661. Making test-pieces; upsetting. JOHN SHAW & SONS (SALFORD) Ltd. 27 June, 1966 [28 June, 1965], No. 27319/65. Headings B3A and B3H. [Also in Division G1] In an upset testing machine a sample 2 is cropped from a bar 4 to be tested by a first fluid-operated ram 10, transferred to an anvil 14 whilst located by a member 18 operated by a second fluid-operated ram 16 and upset by a third fluid-operated ram 24. The rams may be operated by hydraulic or pneumatic fluid and the sequence of operations may be controlled automatically or manually. The rams 10, 16 act in a vertical plane with their line of stroke inclined at 45 degrees to the horizontal, Fig. 2 (not shown). Upsetting ram 24 acts horizontally. After the latter has been withdrawn the sample falls into a shoot.
