1415866 Pneumatic activators A DEJOUX J CAMION E CAMPOT J CONNEAU S CONTIVAL J DETTON M GOURNELLE AND A TRAIMOND 6 Nov 1972 [5 Nov 1971] 51085/72 Heading F1D [Also in Division B3] A pneumatically operated ram apparatus comprises a cylinder 1 with a piston 5 which divides the cylinder into first and second chambers 22, 23 which are normally connected to a vacuum and can be selectively connected to atmospheric pressure or compressed gas, e.g. nitrogen, to effect a working and a return stroke. The second chamber 23 is smaller than the first chamber and is connectable to atmospheric pressure or compressed gas pressure by a solenoid valve VAT 2 in a large cross-section inlet passage 27 which allows rapid introduction of air or gas to effect a rapid stroke, the first chamber 22 being maintained in connection with the vacuum. The piston rod 9 of the piston has a striker 16 which is held in its upper position by a rotatable cut-away pin 18. The pin is rotated to release the striker at the same time as the valve VAT 2 is opened. A manometer (M), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the line from the first chamber 22 to the vacuum pump delivers a signal when the desired low pressure is reached to allow initiation of an impact stroke. The ram apparatus is used in conjunction with a punch 42, Fig. 3, and die 32 to cause impact of the punch on material in the die. The ram apparatus is mounted on columns 33 extending from the die 32 and the punch 42 is mounted on a plate 39 slidable on the columns. The material to be worked is held in a crucible 44 which is removed from the die 53 by hydraulic pressure in a chamber 48. The die is mounted on a plate 52 floating on lead or anchored to a large concrete block in a bed of sand. Several piston-cylinder assemblies may be used in series and actuated simultaneously, Fig. 4 (not shown), or alternatively the piston-cylinder assemblies may be parallel and side-by-side, Fig. 6 (not shown). The ram apparatus may act upwards, downwards, or horizontally and may act in opposition to a similar ram apparatus on a floatingly arranged die.
