Abstract
1,164,999. Percussive tools. HOLMAN BROS. Ltd. 15 Dec., 1966 [20 Dec., 1965], No. 53996/65. Heading B4C. [Also in Division F1] A pneumatic percussive tool such as a rock drill or road breaker, comprises a piston 11 reciprocable in a cylinder 12 and an exhaust silencing means including first and second expansion chambers 20, 21, the compressed air being exhausted during the working stroke into the chambers via a discharge port 15 and a transfer port 25. The expansion chambers are of accurate shape and may be cast integrally with the cylinder or made of sheet metal welded thereto or made as separate units and secured to the cylinder with a suitable seal; instead of metal the chambers may be made from a synthetic plastics material. In operation, compressed air is fed into the cylinder 12, thereby driving the piston units working stroke. As the upper surface of the piston passes the port 15, the air flows into the chamber 20 where it expands and then passes via a groove 23 in the piston and the transfer port 25 into the chamber 21 where the air flows to atmosphere via a pipe 26.
