849,398. Pneumatic single-stroke apparatus. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 26, 1959 [June 9, 1958], No. 17899/59. Class 8(2). A single-acting compressed air actuated jack comprises a cylinder 10 divided into chambers 54, 56 by a piston 52 having its rod 64 serving to reduce the effective cross-sectional area of chamber 56 to which compressed air is admitted through a throttle valve 46 and cylinder port 50 and from thence through a passage 82 in the piston 52 on fracture of a glass plate 84 fracture of a glass plate 84 effected by a push rod 86. In operation the throttle valve 46 is closed after chamber 56 is changed to a predetermined pressure and the working stroke is initiated by breaking the glass sealing plate 84. The piston is locked at the end of its stroke by the expansion of split rings 60, 62 carried in a recess 58 of the piston into a groove 16 cut in the end of the cylinder.
