Abstract
982,927. Compressors. NORMALAIR Ltd. March 6, 1963 [March 31, 1962], No. 12479/62. Heading F1N. A compressor comprises a piston 13 operating within a cylinder 12, a valve plate 2 provided with valves 5 and 6 being disposed between the cylinder 12 and a cylinder head 1 in which are formed suction and discharge chambers 4 and 3, respectively, the valve-plate 2 having a by-pass port 11 which is controlled by a piston 14 the operation of which is controlled by a pilot valve 7, the latter when open allowing compressed fluid from the discharge chamber 3 to pass through a port 8 and a duct 9 to exert pressure on the piston 14 so as to close the port 11, and the valve 7 when closed preventing the fluid from passing to the piston 14, so unloading the compressor. The valve 7 is preferably operated by a solenoid but may be operated by hydraulic, pneumatic, cable or rod means. The piston 14 is biased to the closed position by a spring 15, a second stiff spring 17 being provided to limit the opening movement of the piston 14 which is adapted to permit fluid to bleed from the duct 9 to the suction chamber 4. If the compressor has more than one cylinder a single pilot valve may control the operation of a plurality of by-pass pistons, more than one of which may be associated with each cylinder.
