Abstract

1416204 Anti-skid braking systems WABCO WESTINGHOUSE GmbH 17 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 23621/73 Heading F2F In an anti-skid braking system, at least one brake cylinder 5, has a pressure chamber 6 controlled by a regulating valve assembly 1, and a return chamber 58 opposing the pressure chamber and provided with a connection to the pressure chamber via the assembly which is effective during brake release allowing air to pass via the return chamber to atmosphere to reduce noise. Air, from a source 4, is controlled by an actuating valve 9, and, during braking, passes through a passage 25 a restriction 28, a diaphragm valve 21, which is open, a variable restrictor 30, 35, operated by a piston 31, and a line 8 to the pressure chamber 6. When a skid signal is transmitted, a control unit 14 operates a solenoid valve 12 opening communication from the passage 25 to the other side of the diaphragm 21 to close the valve. Simultaneously, a diaphragm valve 51, controlling communication between the pressure chamber 6 and the return chamber 58, which is held closed by air pressure via an inlet 53 communicating with a line 7, is opened by a solenoid valve 13 closing such communication. The size of a passage 56 in the body of the valve 51 is chosen along with a restricted port 61 in the return chamber to atmosphere to optimize noise reduction due to air exhausting. The pressure chambers of a plurality of brake cylinders may be connected to one or more return chambers via such a valve 51.
