Abstract

[Also in Divisions F1 and F2] The flow of working fluid to the suction valve or valves of at least one, but not all, the cylinders of a compressor, is controlled by a pressure responsive valve 4 having a piston 6 slidable in a cylinder 7 and normally urged by a spring 13 to open the valve 4 but arranged to be urged to a position closing the valve 4 when a valve 22 is opened to allow high-pressure fluid from the delivery side of the compressor to pass through ducts 21, 17, 19 to the cylinder 7. When the valve 22 is closed fluid trapped in the cylinder 7 bleeds away through an axial hole 11 and a bleed hole 12 in the piston 6. The valve 4 may be operated by a bellows or diaphragm and may be normally closed so that the high-pressure fluid then acts to open the valve. The valve 22 may be operated by a solenoid 23 energized by a manually actuable, thermally responsive or pressure responsive electric switch, or may be directly manually operated.
