Apparatus for feeding measured quantities of clay to moulds comprises a measuring chamber 20 into which clay is fed from a pugmill through a feed arm 11, Fig. 3, a closure plate 24 which is slid back to uncover a discharge opening 23 in the bottom of the chamber when full, a plunger 30 which descends and forces clay from the chamber into a mould and a skirt 32 on the plunger 30 which severs the clay in the chamber from that in the feed arm. The plate 24 is withdrawn by a piston-rod 25 operated by a piston 26 in a cylinder 27 into which fluid under pressure, hydraulic or pneumatic, is directed through a port A by a valve which is operated, through trigger switches and solenoids, from the movement of a horizontal mould table 50. The valve also directs pressure fluid through a port C into a cylinder 35, the piston 34 of which forces down the plunger 30. The descent of the plunger 30 operates a solenoid which causes the valve to direct pressure fluid into the cylinder 27 through a port B and so restore the closure plate 24. Finally the valve operates to retract the plunger 30 and admit clay to the chamber 20 for the next feeding operation. As shown, Fig. 2, two moulds 51 are filled at a time, a mouth piece 10 from the pugmill branching into two feed arms 11, 12. The valve mechanism may be operated by the pressure build-up in the measuring chamber.
