1398611 Powder compression press LE CARBONE-LORRAINE 25 May 1972 [2 June 1971] 24791/72 Headings B5A and B5F A double-acting powder compression press comprises three moulding members, viz, a die and upper and lower rams movable relatively thereto and a single fluid-operated piston and cylinder means for controlling the relative movements of the die and rams, the piston and cylinder means having two piston-rods, one of which is connected to one of said moulding members, the other of which is connected to another of said moulding members, and the third moulding member being rigid with the body of the press. As shown in Fig. 1, the machine comprises uprights 1 rigidly connected by cross-bars 2, 3, 4. Cylinder 8 is mounted on cross-bar 4 and upper ram 7 on cross-bar 2. Plate 5 carrying die 19 and plate 6 carrying lower ram 18 are movable along uprights 1. If fluid is supplied below piston 17 of cylinder 8, main piston-rod 9 is raised through a distance a to abut stop 10 and plate 5 is raised the same amount through rods 15, plate 12 and lower piston-rod 11, the depth a of die 19 being then filled with powder. On further supply below piston 17, lower ram 18 and plate 6 are raised off packing 20 with die 19, upper ram 7 entering the die 19 to effect top compression. When stop 21 is reached by plate 12, rod 9, plate 6 and lower ram 18 continue to rise, compressing spring 14, effecting bottom compression until a pressure threshold is reached in the fluid circuit. Fluid is then applied above piston 17, so that plate 6 comes to rest again on packing 20 and plate 12 on stop 16 so that the article is ejected. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the die is rigidly connected to the body of the machine, the upper and lower rams being movable.
