In its lower position the anvil allows the ram to drop further than normal to uncover a working fluid port 33, Fig. 6, to prevent further operation of the hammer until the anvil is raised by engagement with a pile. The working fluid is steam supplied through passages 37 to a chamber 26. The chamber 26 has a rotary valve 27 controlled by a follower 29 engaged with a slot 28 on the ram to recycle the hammer automatically. The ram is prevented from rotating by a pin-and-slot connection 16, 16a, The hammer is single acting being raised by steam pressure and falling under gravity. When the part 33 is uncovered the steam is ducted to atmosphere through a port 40.
