Abstract

1,205,428. Percussive tools. ALLIED STEEL & TRACTOR PRODUCTS Inc. 13 Dec., 1967 [5 Oct., 1967], No. 56607/67. Heading B4C. [Also in Division E1] A percussive tool of the type including an impact ram 35 reciprocable in a cylinder 11 and a tool bit 40 also mounted for reciprocation in the cylinder comprises at least one deactivating port 30 which is so positioned that, when the tool is lifted from a work surface or is under " no load " conditions, " bouncing " of the tool bit against its holder 49 will not interrupt communication between the cylinder bore and the atmosphere via the port(s) 30. When lifted or when under " no load " conditions air below the ram will be exhausted via port(s) 30 and the ram will stop reciprocating. In operation, with the tool bit engaging a work surface, air is introduced via an automatic valve V into the upper part of the cylinder, thus forcing the ram downwardly, air below the ram being exhausted via port 28, passage 27 and a gap 32. When the ram passes an exhaust port 29 the pressure drop above the ram is sensed by the valve which then connects the upper part of the cylinder to exhaust via gap 32 and admits air to the lower part of the cylinder via the port 28. The ram continues to reciprocate until the tool is raised or is under " no-load " conditions. The tool is resiliently carried by support plates 17.
