In a high velocity metal shearing or forming machine a tool is carried on an elasticallydriven carrier member to which is directly opposed a similar elastically driven or controlled member which can serve as an anvil. The machine comprises almost similar upper and lower rams 110 and 110A. The ram 110 comprises a cylinder 112 and a piston 114 connected to a tool carrier 118 by three pistonrods 116. High pressure air is stored in an annular reservoir 124 and is admitted to the cylinder by opening valves 128, 129 which are rapidly actuated by cylinders 130, 131. Air for the return stroke is admitted by a valved port 132, and air on the other side of the piston is exhausted through a port 134, controlled by a valve 136. An adjustable valve 138 maintains air pressure in front of the piston 114 during the working stroke and prevents damage by impact of the piston with the cylinder end, should the opposing ram fail to operate. The piston velocity is adjusted by a restrictor 142, the tools will normally strike the work before the piston 114 passes the port 140. The upper ram is suspended in the raised position by engagement of a spring-loaded catch 146 with a projection 148 on the piston. The upper and lower ram assemblies are joined by pillars 152 and tie-rods 154.
