Abstract
1,136,470. Pile driving. VULCAN IRON WORKS, Inc. 30 May, 1967 [8 June, 1966], No. 24937/67. Heading E1H. [Also in Division B3] A pile driving drop hammer has its tup raised by pressure fluid such as steam admitted below a piston 25 under the control of a valve 32 operated by means 45, 46, 47 selected to give a normal or a short lift. The semi-rotary valve 32 in chest 31 is actuated by an axial cam 46 as the tup reaches the bottom of its fall, to place duct 34 into communication with the steam admission passage 30, 36. This causes the piston 25 to rise. For normal stroke working the valve 31 is rotated by an axial cam 45 to open duct 34 to exhaust port 35 thereby causing the piston and tup to fall by gravity. The end of the upstroke is cushioned by air trapped above port 38. For short stroke working the valve rocker arm 41 is moved to the right, Fig. 1, by a fluid motor 51 into alignment with another axial cam 47 which effects reversal of the valve 32.
