Abstract

704,324. Injection-moulding molten wax &c. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. Aug, 20, 1951 [May 20, 1950], No. 12684/50. Class 87 (2) Molten wax or other material is forced by compressed air from a container 7, Figs. 2, 2A, through a nozzle 15 into a mould, and then a follow-up pressure greater than the air pressure is applied to, the material in the mould by a pneumatically-operated piston 25. The wax container 7 is supported within an oil chamber 1, the oil surrounding the container and being heated by electrical elements 11, 11a. Oil-filled tubes 8 extend through the container. The upper end of the nozzle is located within the container and wax enters the nozzle through a pipe 31.. A rotatable manuallycontrolled spring-seated valve 33 is mounted athwart the nozzle'passage 49, and has a branch passage 59 which prevents vacuum formation when (the valve being closed) piston 25 is raised, ascent of the piston sucking in wax through passages 62, 61, 49a and 59. The nozzle is heated by a coil 17. Compressed air is supplied to the container through pipe 53.. The container is filled through an aperture closed oy a hinged door, Fig. 3 (not shown. In operation the mould is mounted on a table, Fig. 1 (not shown) and raised by pneumatic or hydraulic pressure until it engages the end 21 of the nozzle. Valve &3 is then opened, the compressed air (at 80 pounds p.s.i.) forces wax into the mould, piston 25 is lowered to apply a pressure of up to 1,500 pounds p.s.i., the valve is closed and the piston raised. In a modification, Fig. 5, the nozzle 69 points upwards and the mould is Clamped thereon by means of a plate 91 adjustably mounted on a beam 93, the plate being carried by a manually-turned stem 92 threaded in beam 93. The nozzle 69 is enclosed within a chamber 73 which communicates with the wax container 71 by way of pipe 77. The cylinder which operates the pneumatic piston 25 is secured to the base of chamber 73 (and is. immersed in the wax). An air bleed passage 79 extends from the interior of chamber 73 to the atmosphere, and filling of the mould is indicated when wax exudes from this passage into the atmosphere. The valve 85 is outside the oil' chamber 81. In a further modification Fig. 6 (not shown) the nozzle points downwardly and the valve is outside the oil' chamber.
